Father's Day

So, this morning, my pastor spoke on "How to be a godly father."  I knew I needed to be in church today, because my dad taught me to assemble together with other believers.  It's hard now that he's gone, but I know he would want me to continue in my journey in the faith.

Anyway, I sat there thinking about some of the more recent men that have come into my life in the pursuit of dating.  I sat there, and seriously could have seen they were not the kind of guys that would be in this category, but in that moment, it took a little while.  Sometimes that's because men don't show everything at once...but some could be because I do want to find a man who will love me and treat me the way that God loves and treats the church.

Anyway, I know that this message was good for me, in my search for a mate.  This was the outline.

I. Model God's GRACE
a. Give - Proverbs 22:6
b. Respond - II Corinthians 12:9
c. Allow your children to be honest with you - Hebrews 12:15
d. Communicate - Ephesians 4:32
e. Express your love consistently and abundantly - I Corinthians 13:4-8

II. Instill God's purpose in their life - Deuteronomy 6:6
- Keep the word of God, study it.  Show your children you love God's word!
- Show them how to spend their time and talents for the Lord.
- Remind them who is God and they are not!
- Your family is the greatest treasure you have...show them that you love them, but don't sacrifice not giving them the Word of God.

III. Actively work in reconciliation - II Corinthians 5:13, 18

IV. Build character in children - Proverbs 6:20
What does it mean to have faith in God?
What does it mean to have integrity?
to have poise - look people in the eye, manners, open doors for women, live like a godly man, teach them to wait until marriage for sex, teach them financially - don't go into debt, save money, etc.
Do your children see you reading God's word?

The last question, pastor brought to us brought memories of me seeing my dad read God's Word.  He was in it daily - and several times throughout the day.  A lot of people may say it was because he was a preacher and he needed to know the word because of his "job," but it was more than just a job.  It was because the Bible is a living book.  He knew that and knew the power and guidance the Bible had.

When I read the bible, I think of my dad and the example that he gave me to want to read God's Word! I'm thankful for that heritage.

I may have sad feelings as I sit here thinking about the times I won't get to share with my dad, but I'm thankful for the time that I have gotten with him.  I'm looking forward to meeting the man God is preparing for me as a future mate :)
