The Voice 2015 Jordan Smith - Top 12: "Great is Thy Faithfulness"

Seriously, was overwhelmed last night while watching Jordan Smith sing "Great is thy Faithfulness" on the Voice.  I have been amazed at Jordan since the blind auditions. I do like Mark Hood, but for totally different reasons.

When Jordan did the intro for the song, I was thinking...this is going to be good, but it exceeded my expectations.  Take a listen!  Hallelujah! was my response after he finished.

Long time...no blog

This has been a pretty bad year for me and blogging. I think part of the reason is my laptop died this year...and the only computer in my house is in the study and it's just not visible.  Most of the stuff I do on the internet is via my phone or iPad and I just don't like blogging on either of those. I like a keyboard where I can type so much easier.

It's November...and one of my favorite months. I like November because it's a month that I usually get to see most of my family...if not all of them.  However, this year is a little sad, as some of the family will not be able to come in and visit for Buckeye Christmas.  It also doesn't feel like Buckeye Christmas as we are not doing our regular name exchange.  It's just seems things are changing ... and I really hate change!

I am trying to keep my thankful attitude though and trying to remember to post on my Facebook page my thanks for each day.  I began yesterday.

November 1st - I'm thankful I get to meet with my brothers and sisters in Christ on the first day of the week.  It's Sunday! See you at church.

November 2nd -Today I'm thankful for the jobs God has provided me to serve Him. Yes, you can serve God in your everyday ordinary job.  How is this?  Because in everything we do we should bring glory to Him.  I have the opportunity to work with Kings Daughters Medical Center Burlington Family Care Center. I was first hired in 2010, the same year the layoffs began. I am in my sixth year here, and am thankful for every day I have been able to work for this medical system.  I know there is some negative feedback about our hospital, but I'm thankful for them. They have allowed me to have insurance for my medical needs.

I am also thankful for my jobs at Gateway Baptist Church.  I clean the church as custodian.  This job is a paying job. I'm thankful they took a chance on me when I wanted to switch my part time job from Skeetos to church as I hated missing church services.  This position doesn't just allow me to make it to church, it requires me to be there to open and close the church.

I also lead music at church and teach the pre-primary class.  I do these as ministry and really enjoy both of them.

My final position I'm thankful for is one that actually doesn't pay the bills...in fact I probably pay out more to do it.  I am a certified Zumba instructor. I wanted to get my certification to teach Zumba because I finally found a workout that I absolutely enjoy.  It's fun and it works.  Especially when I ate the right way.

These jobs and opportunities allow me to serve God in different ways and I'm thankful God gives me the energy and strength to do them.

Hopefully I can keep this blog up and get back into blogging things. I love being able to remember things and enjoy reading on previous entries to see what God has done for me.

NEEDTOBREATHE "Brother feat. Gavin DeGraw" [Official Video]

This song has been practically on repeat on my playlist.  I have heard it for sometime, but finally broke down and bought it from iTunes to add to my playlist.  When I began looking it up, I noticed there was a version with Gavin DeGraw...Now I'm a huge fan of Gavin, even though he's a pop singer, I have really enjoyed his music since his first CD. I really think my favorite song from him is "I Don't Want to Be" which is also the theme song of One Tree Hill - one of my favorite TV shows.  But I have liked almost one song from every CD he has done.

Anyone, when I saw this version, I was like...I'm so excited.  Here are the lyrics:

Ramblers in the wilderness we can't find what we need
Get a little restless from the searching
Get a little worn down in between
Like a bull chasing the matador is the man left to his own schemes
Everybody needs someone beside em' shining like a lighthouse from the sea

Brother let me be your shelter
I'll never leave you all alone
I can be the one you call
When you're low
Brother let me be your fortress
When the night winds are driving on
Be the one to light the way
Bring you home

Face down in the desert now there's a cage locked around my heart
I found a way to drop the keys where my failures were
Now my hands can't reach that far
I ain't made for a rivalry I could never take the world alone
I know that in my weakness I am strong, but
It's your love that brings me home

Brother let me be your shelter
I'll never leave you all alone
I can be the one you call
When you're low
Brother let me be your fortress
When the night winds are driving on
Be the one to light the way
Bring you home

And when you call and need me near
Sayin' where'd you go?
Brother I'm right here
And on those days when the sky begins to fall
You're the blood of my blood
We can get through it all

Brother let me be your shelter
I'll never leave you all alone
I can be the one you call
When you're low
Brother let me be your fortress
When the night winds are driving on
Be the one to light the way
Bring you home

Brother let me be your shelter
I'll never leave you all alone
I can be the one you call
When you're low
Brother let me be your fortress
When the night winds are driving on
Be the one to light the way
Bring you home

I hope you enjoy the song too!

#WeGetDressed

I was challenged by a blog post from Chrystal Evans Hurst.  I love following her blogs and podcasts.  She has challenged us to make an effort to get dressed and to snap a photo and post it on Instagram.  I have really enjoyed doing this. It's been an interesting challenge.  I don't have a lot of problem in this area, but I do need to be challenged to do more things.

Chrystal pointed out that God is very detailed in the instructions for the priestly garments in Exodus.  He gave some purpose for it, but he also wanted them beautiful.  God loves beauty.  It's seen in His creation. The trees, flowers, mountains, etc.  Creation is beautiful.  It may have been cursed after sin entered into the world, but there is still beauty there.

I will try to post the weeks worth of pictures next week.

I am a Gospel story!!

Why are their 4 Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) in the Bible?  Three of those are very similar in what they tell of Jesus' life, but still there are 4 total.  Tonight I had the opportunity to be reminded of the answer to this question. I had learned this in my studies at Bible College and so did our speaker.  A friend of mine from that Bible College, Greg Wagoner, spoke at my church's first night of mission conference.  I was thankful for his challenge in tonight's message.  He brought out the four different faces that the gospel writings present Jesus as...

Lion - Matthew presents to the Jews that Christ is KING
The theme verse of Matthew is from 1:21 "She will give birth to a son, and you are to name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins." The goal is to REPENT - Matthew 3:2 "and saying, 'Repent, because the kingdom of heave has come near!'"

Ox - Mark presents to the Romans Christ is SERVANT
The theme verse of Mark is from 8:35 "For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me and the gospel will save it."  The goal is to HAVE FAITH - Mark 11:22 "Jesus replied to them, 'Have faith in God.'"

Man - Luke presents to the Greeks that Christ is the SON OF MAN
The theme verse of Luke is from 19:10 "For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost." The goal is that we CAN'T SERVE GOD AND MAMMON - Luke 16:13 "No household slave can be the slave of two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the others.  You can't be slaves to both God and money."

Eagle - John presents to the world that Christ is the SON OF GOD
The theme verse is, of course, John 3:16 "For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life."  The goal is to BE BORN AGAIN - John 3:7 "Do not be amazed that I told you that you must be born again."

Now...these are the four gospels in the Bible...however I'm a gospel story too!  In 2 Corinthians 3:2-5, Paul writes "You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, recognized and read by everyone. It is clear that you are Christ's letter, produced by us, not written with ink but with the Spirit of the living God -- not on stone tablets but on tablets that are hearts of flesh."  So, I need to allow God to write His story on my life.  While Greg was preaching tonight...the song below came into my mind and I really like how it talks about us being an empty page for God to write Your story on it.  I am an epistle...a living epistle. Take a look at my story, by watching my life and how I live it.  May God be glorified in it...because after all I have been changed.  Jesus came to earth, died on the cross (became my sacrifice) for my sins, was buried...but that wasn't the end.  He rose again on the third day.  So...Jesus paid it all...and I accepted that free gift from Him.  Therefore, I'm a Gospel story.

Chris August writes "I've wasted chances to speak up and make some noise, why do I let these moments pass me by...Everybody ought to know...I will sing about Your love, I will shout it to the sky, I will tell of what you've done, when the people ask me why, I live my life this way I'll say that I am unashamed of you....I feel like a preacher, I've got something to say, I'm treating right now like it's now or never, I could talk about the weather, could talk about nothing all day, I rather talk about what lasts forever...Everybody needs to know, that I will sing about Your love, I will shout it to the sky, I will tell of what you done, and when the people ask me why I live my life this way I'll say that I am unashamed of the gospel, the cross, the good news for the lost, the blood that spilled down Calvary's hill, for what Your grace did and what Your grace does, oh I am unashamed of the name Jesus..."

That's what I want my life to speak to people. I want them to know I love Jesus and what He did for me...and they can have that gift too!  It's FREE!!! It didn't cost me anything to accept, but it cost Jesus His life...however...He gave it WILLINGLY...why?  BECAUSE HE LOVED THE WORLD!!!

My Voice Experience

What a great time I had with my audition for The Voice.  I didn't get picked during my audition, but it was really fun to take the opportunity to audition.

The photo to the right is me at work.  I found this advertisement in a magazine, so I wanted to do my practice voice pose.

If I were to have been picked I'm not sure which judge I would choose. I do like Adam, because he has been there from the beginning, but I love Pharrell.  He's very talented...and also adorable!  However, my momma loves Blake, so I think momma would want me to pick him.  LOL!!

So, I'm gonna give some details of how the audition process is...it's a pretty cool process.  I know a lot of people were disappointed, but I honestly enjoyed my experience and really had a great time.  I think part of my enjoyment was that I didn't expect to get picked.  I sing (mostly at church).  I'm comfortable there, and I love singing. However, I don't sing because people think I'm a good singer. I sing because I want to use my voice to glorify God. He's the reason I sing.  Anyway...having that attitude of just wanting to do my best, I was able to walk out of the audition room with my head held high knowing that I did my best and I didn't forget my words - which is a major accomplishment for me.  I have forgotten my words a few times at church when I have sang and it's a humbling experience.

This was my audition outfit.  I love the company pieces to peaces.  My niece Karis introduced me to her website.  She sells the cutest headbands and beanies and has branched out into t-shirts too.  I like this one #lumberjane combining it with the lumberjack headband is really fun. I had a great hair day too!

I had a long walk to the end of the line.  My audition time was 2 pm. I took a cab from the college where I was staying to Navy Pier.  The driver let me out and I began my walk.  Part of it was outside, but I went inside and began finding the signs for where to go.  This was a really LONG walk.

Went through the whole pier only to end up outside again...got a great shot of the Chicago skyline. I loved this city.  It was fun walking almost everywhere I went with my niece, but a couple of times I was able to take an uber, the bus and the subway.
It was pretty cold there...was thankful for my new boots because they kept my feet warm even though there was ice on the lake.

I got to meet some really cool people. One of them had tried out before and was able to inform us what to expect.  We had to stand outside for quite awhile.  I was so cold, but was able to warm up once we got inside.
I was able to get this shot with the banner behind me.  This was in a room where there were 6 lines in front of a row of tables.  The girl at the table went through your information and stapled it together.  You had a band on your arm as well as a hand stamp.
My hand stamp. I didn't get the photo taken when it was fresh, but still wanted a photo of it.

We had two holding rooms where we sat and waiting to be in the audition room.  This room was huge and we had the opportunity to hit the restrooms, and grab something the eat while we waited.
This is the back of the room.  It's pretty long and there was a line of chairs that were in groups of 10 down the side that went first before I got the opportunity to go.

This is the second holding room. This is the back of the room.  This room was fun to be in...until we had a diva walk into the room and crunched on our fun. However, we banded together and was able to continue to enjoy the time in here.
This girl in the pink was the diva of this room. Someone had began singing and she turned around and said to be quiet, but then someone else began singing anyway and we all started again.  It was really fun to be in this room and helped with nerves.

After this room, they called 10 at a time.  There were three kids in my group, so there were 3 adults who were also in there beside the girl from the casting company.  She introduced herself to us and explained the process - we would sing a verse and chorus.  She would keep her head down and listen and then after everyone had a turn, she would give further instructions.

I was first to go in my group.  I was glad to be able to go first.  One to get it over with...the other so I could just sit back and enjoy the rest of the auditions.  It was really nice to be able to hear the others.  In my group no one went further than that auditions.  The girl from the casting office, thanked us for coming and giving our time to do the auditions.  She also said for us to continue pursuing our dreams and to come back and try again.  I was hoping that I would be able to meet Anthony Evans, Jr., who is one of the people that works with the casting company...however, I am glad he wasn't the one to tell me "no."

It was nice to be able to spend time with my niece who is going to college at Moody Bible Institute.  Also nice to be able to spend the nights with her.

My adventure was fun.  I'm so glad that I did it and maybe I'll try again.

Who is your "other side"?

Last month, Jim Jeremias spoke at my church on "Who is your "other side"?  In Luke 8:22-40, Jesus is with his disciples.  He says to them "Let us go over unto the other side of the lake."  They all are in the boat, and Jesus falls asleep.  A storm comes while they are on the lake and the disciples wake up Jesus, and he rebuked the wind and the raging water, and asks them "Where is your faith?"  The disciples talked among themselves wondering who Jesus was, because even the wind and water obey His voice.

They get to the other side, and they meet the man who Jesus knew would be there.  He was possessed with devils.  Jesus asks "What is thy name?" The devil respond "Legion" because many devils were entered into him.  Jesus commands the devils to go to the swine.

As this passage began, Jesus knew there was a man on the other side of the lake.  So Jesus tells His disciples they need to go.

All believers have an "other side."  Jesus has a purpose for that ministry on the other side.  Who is your "other side"?  Do you want to go to your other side to witness about Jesus' love?

One of my favorite movies is "Facing the Giants."  This movie is my favorite because of the message of praising God for whatever He brings and allows in our life.  If it's pain then we praise Him, because He is our strength.

I was reminded of this movie last night during a message that Tim Ferguson (the adult Sunday school teacher at my church) was preaching.  He quoted Ephesians 5:19-20
19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

He spoke of his father-in-law Brad Quackenbush (who was a professor of mine in college) shared with him about this passage when he was diagnosed with cancer.  He said, "giving thanks for all things...even cancer...)"  This reminds me of Coach Grant Taylor's speech to the team. "I want God to bless this team so much people will talk about what He did. But it means we gotta give Him our best in every area.  And if we win, we praise Him and if we lose, we praise Him. Either way we honor Him with our actions and attitudes.  So I'm asking you...what are you living for?  I resolved to give God everything I've got, then I'll leave the results up to Him.  I want to know if you'll join me."

So...I say all of this to tell you about an opportunity that I'm going to do to honor God.  There is a show on NBC called "The Voice."  I know this is a show mostly for pop, rock, country, etc, but I'm going to audition for this show and my attitude is to bring glory to God.

The same night that I heard the sermon by Jim Jeremias, I also had written in my journal a letter to the Lord...It was entitled Comfort Zone.
Lord, I believe that You have given me my voice to bring glory to Your name.  I believe if any further progression from the open call is to bring glory to You.  Lord You have used many women in the Bible to shine for You. My name sake, Deborah, sang praises to You in the era of the judges.  Ruth left her family's nation and heritage to follow You and was able to be apart of the lineage of Jesus.  Esther was able to be used as a helper to Your people...to protect them. You used Abigail to go before her husband and intercede with David.  Of course, Mary was used to carry Jesus, who is our Savior and Redeemer.  Lord, I don't know if you are going to bless me with a call back, or even to the blind auditions with the judges, but I ask that You help me to be able to show You in my audition...Amen!
So...This Saturday, February 21st, at 2:00 pm, I will be in Chicago, IL to the open call audition for The Voice.  Let the adventure begin...

Happy New Year - 2015 is here!

Wow! We made it to the future ... as in Back to the Future.  This was a cute movie, and it's funny to see the clothing and other things from the movie that have happened or have not happened.  I think my favorite was the clothing they had us wearing in that movie in the future. We are pretty much the same...I mean style has changed, but nothing too drastic like we imagined back in the 80's.

So, I have enjoyed this year so far.  I have some goals lined up for the year.  One I will be announcing at a later date, but for now I'll share the following with you.

  • Bible Reading/Bible Study
  • Healthier Living
  • Savings Plan
  • Organization
  • Unspoken (this one I can't reveal yet...)
Bible Reading/Bible Study - Bible Reading - I have decided to attempt again to read the Bible in a year. I struggle each year finishing this goal.  It's usually that I get behind and then never am able to catch up.  And of course, this year, I have gotten behind already, but I think I have my plan set up now and will be able to catch up.  Bible Study - I am meeting with some girls from my church each week and we are working with a book on studying the Bible and then we will implement what we have learned from it to actual books of the Bible.   I'm excited about this study and accountability.

Healthier Living - I have this on my list a lot, but was motivated to put it back on there this year, because mainly for the fact that I'm a Christian.  I should be treating my body better - after all it is where the Holy Spirit dwells.  I want to be able to do everything that I can do to treat it better.  I have been drinking a lot of water, and watching the types of food I'm eating.  So proud that I didn't give into the donuts brought into the office yesterday.  I still have chocolate, but just not a whole lot of it.  I  mean after all...a girl loves her chocolate.

Savings Plan - This year in April I will be paying my car off.  So I want to continue to do well with saving back my car payment amount or at least a portion to be able to work on getting some money saved up to be a better steward with the funds the Lord has allowed me to earn.

Organization Plan - This is mainly with my scrapbooking area, but it is all of my stuff upstairs in my room. I want to have a better plan of where everything is and making sure if it doesn't have a place it doesn't stay there.

Unspoken goal - Right now, I ask that you be praying about me stepping out of my comfort zone to try something toward a dream of mine.  I had a weird feeling the other day when I found out I got time off to take this step.  It was like...wow! this is really going to happen.

So until next time...Keep praying!
